What is Organoleptic Testing?

When it comes to health, wellness, and cosmetic products, consistency is key. That’s why at BLC, we rely on organoleptic testing as a cornerstone of our product development and quality assurance processes.
What is Organoleptic Testing?
Organoleptic testing refers to the evaluation of a product using the human senses — primarily taste, smell, sight, and touch. It’s a sensory-based approach used to detect even the most subtle changes in ingredients or formulations that might otherwise go unnoticed by analytical methods alone.
Whether we're formulating a supplement, beauty product, or consumable, our senses are often the first line of defence in maintaining product integrity.
Why is Organoleptic Testing Important?
Natural ingredients — the heart of many of our bespoke formulations — can vary slightly from batch to batch. This can be due to changes in harvest conditions, soil, climate, or even supplier processes. As a result, key sensory attributes such as flavour, colour, or texture might shift, even if the ingredients are from the same source.
Without careful organoleptic testing, these inconsistencies could affect not just the user experience, but also brand trust and product performance.
Our Organoleptic Testing Process at BLC
We’ve built a robust, multi-stage process to ensure quality and consistency:
Initial Ingredient Assessment
During product development, we sample and assess each individual ingredient within your bespoke formula using sensory testing.
Production Ingredient Resampling
Once ingredients are delivered to our production site, we re-test them — this time within the final product formulation — to ensure nothing has shifted in transit or storage.
Batch Comparison
The newly produced batch is then compared to the original development sample to check for any variations in smell, taste, texture, or visual appearance.
Tweak if Necessary
If we notice any sensory differences, we fine-tune the formula to bring it back in line with the original — ensuring consistency without compromise.
Final Approval
Only once the formula meets our sensory and technical standards do we proceed with full-scale production.
The Result? A Consistent Product Every Time.
At BLC, we pride ourselves on delivering formulas that perform beautifully and consistently — from the first batch to the hundredth. Organoleptic testing isn’t just a technical step in our process — it’s a reflection of our commitment to craftsmanship, care, and quality.
Whether you're working with us to develop a new wellness product or refining an existing one, know that your formula will be meticulously tested, reviewed, and perfected using both science and senses.
