Types of stand up Pouches
Types of stand up Pouches
There are basically three types of standing pouches: Doyen, also called round bottom gusset pouch or Doypack, K-seal Bottom, Plow Bottom. Please see below for a more detailed description of the three types of pouches available.
Doyen Type Pouch
This is the most popular style of stand-up pouch available today. Its rounded bottom with corner-welded edges offers support, allowing the pouch to stand upright on shelves.
In this design, the entire weight of the contents is supported by the sealed area, making it ideal for lighter products (under 1kg). The pouch comes in various sizes, so you can select the one that fits your needs.
K-seal Bottom Type Pouch
With the increasing demand for bag capacity, the K-seal bottom pouch is an excellent choice for products weighing between 500g and 3kg.
It's named the K-seal bag because the bottom resembles the letter "K." This design not only provides stability for the pouch when standing but also maintains its aesthetic appeal.
Plow Bottom Type Pouch
This pouch is also referred to as a corner bottom or folded bottom pouch. For items weighing more than 3kg, the corner bottom style is the preferred option. Unlike other designs, the bottom remains unsealed, allowing the product to rest flat within the pouch.
As a versatile packaging solution, it has gained significant popularity in the food industry in recent years. For instance, it is commonly used to package bulk powder products.
Extras & Finishing options
Stand-up pouches offer a variety of finishing options to enhance both aesthetics and functionality. Glossy finishes provide a vibrant, eye-catching look that enhances product visibility on shelves, while premium soft-touch finishes create a luxurious tactile experience for consumers, making the packaging feel high-end. For eco-conscious brands, sustainable options are available, utilising recyclable or biodegradable materials without compromising quality. Additionally, features like tear notches allow for easy opening, improving user convenience, while options such as matte finishes can give a more understated and elegant appearance.
These diverse extras and finishing choices ensure that stand-up pouches not only protect products but also effectively communicate brand values and appeal to target audiences.

Pouch Materials
All pouches can be made up using different layers of the below core materials. Pouches are typically made with 3 layers. These consist of an inside layer for sealing the pouch together, a middle layer for barrier protection and in some instances appearance, such as MET PET, and a outer layer for the desired finished look, for instance, Gloss, Matte and Soft Touch.
MET/PET
(Metalised Polyethylene Terephthalate)
MET PET is an silver substrate which is non-recyclable. It is popular for brands wanting to incorprate a metallic finish within their
packaging designs.
MET PET is essential for when the product requires extra protection to ensure a longer shelf life, as well as blocking out UV rays.
BOPP
(Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene)
BOPP films have a brilliant glossy finish. They can be available in both white and a highly transparent clear.
It is widely used in the packaging of food supplments due to its high strength and durability, as well as its moisture resistance. Depending on the layer make-up for your requirements, it can be made recyclable.
Paper Based
Flexible Packaging
Paper/kraft is a very popular material choice due to its natural look and feel.
This film does have the option to be made recyclable once formed, but there are limitations to the recyclability depending on the products requirements and barrier protection level required.
PE
(Polyethylene)
PE films are widely popular due to the quality and sustainability of the material. The film is 100% recyclable and has brilliant barrier properties.
It is made up of clear PE film, with another layer of clear PE film added to provide strength and durability.
