Types of stand up Pouches
Types of Cartons & SRPs
There are basically three types of standing pouches: Doyen, also called round bottom gusset pouch or Doypack, K-seal Bottom, Plow Bottom. Please see below for a more detailed description of the three types of pouches available.
Straight Tuck Carton (ST)
Straight tuck cartons are a widely used packaging solution across various industries. Both the top and bottom closure flaps are connected to the same main panel. These boxes fold from front to back in a single direction. Typically, they feature slit locks to keep the flaps securely closed.
Key Features of Straight Tuck Boxes:
-
Suitable for products with light to medium weight
-
Flat-packed for easy storage
-
Can include cutouts without losing structural strength
-
Slit locks ensure a secure closure Slightly higher cost compared to reverse tuck boxes due to increased material usage, as they do not "nest" as efficiently during production.

Reverse Tuck Carton (RT)
Reverse tuck cartons are quite similar to straight tuck boxes, with the main difference being the placement of the closure flaps. One flap is connected to the back of the box, while the other is attached to the front, folding in opposite directions.
Key Features of Reverse Tuck Boxes:
-
Suitable for products of light to medium weight
-
No assembly required.
-
Flat-packed for efficient storage
-
Able to include cutouts without affecting structural integrity
-
Slit locks ensure a secure closure
-
More cost-effective than straight tuck cartons, as their design allows for more efficient use of materials during production..

Lock Bottom Carton (LB)
Lock bottom boxes, also known as 1-2-3 bottom boxes, are specifically designed to support heavier items. For the top closure, these boxes typically feature a tuck top panel with either friction or slit locks.
Key Features of Lock Bottom Cartons:
-
Ideal for heavier items like glass jars
-
Commonly feature a tuck top closure

Carton Materials
In carton packaging, choosing the right material is essential for balancing protection, aesthetics, and sustainability. Different materials offer varying levels of durability, print quality, and eco-friendliness, making them suitable for different types of products. Below are four of the most common materials used in carton retail packaging:
*Each material can be further customised with finishes and coatings to suit specific product needs and brand aesthetics.

Paperboard
Lightweight yet sturdy, paperboard is widely used for folding cartons and is suitable for a variety of products. It can be coated or uncoated, depending on the desired finish and durability.

Recycled Board
Made from post-consumer or post-industrial recycled fibers, recycled board is an environmentally friendly option. It’s commonly used in eco-conscious packaging and is suitable for a wide range of retail products.

Premium Paperboard
A higher-grade version of standard paperboard, premium paperboard provides a smooth, refined surface ideal for high-quality printing and luxurious packaging. It’s often used for premium products.

Corrugated Cardboard
Made from a fluted paper layer sandwiched between two liners, corrugated cardboard is used for packaging heavier or more fragile items. It offers excellent strength and protection during shipping.
